Fire kills 4, injures 22 in old city

DHAKA, April 23, 2021 (BSS) – Four people died and 22 others, including three fire fighter personnel, injured in a fire at a chemical warehouse in the ground floor of “Hazi Musa Mansion”, a six-storey building, at Armanitola in the Old Dhaka early today, police and fire service sources said.

“A total of four people died and 22 others, including four rescuers, were injured in the devastating fire that broke out at a chemical warehouse at about 3:15am and was brought under control at about 6:00am,” a spokesman of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters told BSS.

Total 21 injured were rushed to the Sheikh Hasina Plastic Surgery and Burn Institute unit at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for treatment, Dr Tonmoy Ghosh of the institute told newsmen.

“Three of the injured were shifted to the intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital while one left the hospital with taking first aid,” he added.

Talking to the national news agency, Shahin Fakir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bangshal Police Station, earlier from the spot said the inmates of the building, got trapped in their apartments from the first floor of the six-storey building as there is a chemical warehouse at its ground floor.

Police identified the deceased as a security guard and a female resident, while the fire service officials recovered two bodies, which are yet to be identified, from the fourth floor.

The OC added that the fire service rescuers with the help of all concerned managed to rescue the trapped people by cutting grills of the apartments.

A four-member investigation committee was formed. Headed by fire service and civil defense Deputy Director Noor Hasan, the committee has been asked to submit its report within the next 10 working days.
