Ex-law minister Abdul Matin Khasru laid to rest
DHAKA, April 15, 2021 (BSS) –Awami League Presidium Member, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President, former law minister and valiant freedom fighter Abdul Matin Khasru was laid to eternal rest at his family graveyard at Mirpur village under Brahmanpara upazila in Cumilla around 5.50pm today.
Before the burial, his fifth namaj-e-janaza was held after Asr prayers at Mirpur Government Primary School playground at his village, Home Ministry’s senior information officer Sharif Mahmud Apu told BSS.
A contingent of police gave a guard of honour to valiant freedom fighter Abdul Matin Khasru recalling his role to the 1971 Liberation War.
His forth namaj-e-janaza was held at Bhagaban Government High School ground under Brahmanpara upazila followed by his third namaj-e-janaza after Zohr prayers at Ananda Pilot Government High School ground under Burichang upazila in the district.
Cumilla Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Kamrul Hasan, Superintendent of Police Md Faruque Ahmed, Burichang Upazila Awami League President Abul Hasem Khan, General Secretary and Upazila Chairman Md Akhlakh Haider and BNP Vice-Chairman Shawkat Mahmud were present on the occasion, among others.
Earlier, Khasru’s second namaj-e-janaza was held on the Supreme Court premises in Dhaka this morning.
Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossen, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq, Justices of Supreme Court’s Appellate and High Court Divisions, Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam, Attorney General AM Amin Uddin, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, MP, BNP Joint Secretary General and former General Secretary of Supreme Court Bar Association AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Bar Association’s former and incumbent leaders, ruling party leaders, different political party leaders, lawyers and people from different professions also joined the namaj-e janaza.
On the occasion, Supreme Court Bar Association General Secretary Barrister M Ruhul Kuddus Kajal highlighted different aspects of Khasru’s life and works.
Abdul Monem Wasif, Khasru’s son, sought prayers from the people for his father’s eternal peace.
After janaza, state guard of honour was also given to valiant freedom fighter Abdul Matin Khasru.
On behalf of President M Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, wreaths were placed on the coffin of Abdul Matin Khosru.
Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Attorney General Office, Supreme Court Bar Association, Bangladesh Awami League, Bangabandhu Awami Ainjibi Parishad and Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, different organizations and institutions also placed wreaths on his coffin.
Earlier, his first namaj-e-janaza was held on Alia Madrasha premises at Bakshibazar in the city.
Abdul Matin Khasru passed away at the age of 71 while undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Combined Military Hospital (CMH).
He is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, relatives, a host of well-wishers and admirers.
The judicial activities at the Supreme Court have been postponed due to the death of Khasru, who was elected as the president of Supreme Court Bar Association on March 13.
Khasru became a national political figure doing politics from grassroots.
He was elected parliament members for five times from Cumilla-5 (Burichang-Brahmanpara) constituency and he was the member of parliament of the seat till his death.
He started his career in law profession at Cumilla Judge Court in 1978. Since 1982 he had been practicing regularly at the Supreme Court till his death.
Khasru served as the law minister during Awami League government for 1996-2001 tenure.
He served as legal affairs secretary of the Awami League for long time.
He was elected as the only member of the parliament of the Awami League from Cumilla district in 1991. He became law minister after being elected as MP for 2nd time from Awami League in 1996.
Khasru played a pivotal role in repealing Indemnity Ordinance in the parliament which was a barrier to bring Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s killers to justice.
On February 12, 1950 Khasru was born at Mirpur village under Brahmanpara upazila of Cumilla.
His father’s name is M Abdul Maleque and mother’s name is Jahanara Begum.
He was elected Cumilla Dakshin district Awami League’s member secretary in 1992.
He was elected MP in 1991, 1996, 2008, 2014 and 2018 general elections.
Khasru was also chairman of the parliamentary standing committee of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
He had participated in the 1971 Liberation War.
