Standard services for smarter cities

RAJSHAHI, Oct 14, 2017 (BSS) – Experts at a discussion here today unequivocally called for giving utmost emphasis on following precise standards in manufacturing products and providing services to make cities smarter.

They viewed substandard and adulterated consumer items always pose serious threat to the public health as well the entire society. So, there is no alternative to ensure total quality of the products.

Regional Office of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institutions (BSTI) organized the discussion at Nanking Darbar Hall in the city to mark the 48th World Standard Day-2017. “Standards Make cities smarter” was the main theme of the discussion.

Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Helal Mahmud Sharif addressed the discussion as the chief guest with Altab Hossain, Regional Director of BSTI, in the chair.

Additional District Magistrate Subrata Paul, Deputy Director of Department of Environment Mamun-Or-Rashid, Deputy General Manager of BSCIC Sazedur Rahman, President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Md Muniruzzaman and local unit President of Consumers Association of Bangladesh Kazi Giash Uddin also spoke.

Disseminating his expertise on the theme Professor Iqbal Matin of Department of Civil Engineering in Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology highlighted the aspects of ensuring quality and standard everywhere in the civic life to make the city smarter.

During his keynote presentation, Engineer Selim Reza, Deputy Director (Certificate Marks) of BSTI, narrated the significance of the day alongside highlighting aspects of international standardization of the consumer products.

Chief Guest Helal Mahmud suggested improving the efficiency and cost- effectiveness of their operations, complying with legislative and regulatory requirements, safeguarding health and protecting the environment.

He called upon BSTI to intensify its market inspection and monitoring activities to tackle adulteration and stop the marketing of fake and substandard products.

“To meet the ever-increasing expectations, there is no way but to follow international standards in every step from manufacturing to distribution. People’s expectations are growing day by day with the development of technology. The fast growing information technology has made the whole world to stand before a strong challenge,” Helal Mahmud added.
