Speakers seek intensified govt efforts to establish gender equity

DHAKA, April 1, 2021 (BSS) – Speakers at a online meeting sought
intensified government efforts to stop violence against women and
remove discriminatory outlook from society to establish gender equity
at every spheres of life.

“Bangladesh government is working to establish gender equity and
stop violence on women. But it should give further importance in
implementing the relevant policies,” UN Women Country Representative
Shoko Ishikawa said.

She was addressing the inaugural function of Bangladesh Mahila
Parishad (BMP)’s national council meeting titled “Let us face Covid-19
challenges, let us take ahead women movement” as the special guestt on
virtual platform on Thursday, said a press release.

Christine Johansson, Head of Development Cooperation, Charge De
Affairs, Swedish Embassy in Dhaka addressed it as the special guest
with BMP President Dr Fauzia Moslem in the chair.

BMP General Secretary Melaka Banu delivered the welcome speech.

Speaking on the occasion, Christine Johansson urged the women
rights activists and organization to intensify their efforts to
establish gender equity, stop child marriage and violence on women.

She called for stopping child marriage as it pushes women’s
physical and mental health at risk.

The 2nd and 3rd session of the national council was held today. BMP
Vice-President Rekha Chowdhury chaired the 2nd session while BMP
President Dr Fauzia Moslem presided over the 3rd session.

In the 2nd session, group-wise recommendations for organizational
works were presented through three commissions.
