Govt gives incentives to women workers returning from abroad: Imran

DHAKA, March 31, 2021 (BSS) – On the occasion of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Wage Earners Welfare Board under the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment has given special financial incentives to women workers returning from abroad.

Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Amhed inaugurated the event of handing over cheques for financial assistance to 70 returnee women workers as the chief guest at Vijay-71 auditorium of Prabasi Kalyan Bhaban in the city today.

Wage Earners’ Welfare Board (WEWB) Director General (Additional Secretary) Hamidur Rahman presided over the programme while officials of the concerned ministry and WEWB were also present.

The minister said the special financial assistance is being given to women-workers returning from abroad during the COVID-19 period marking Mujib’s centenary.

Mentioning that 50,000 women workers have returned to the country during the pandemic, he said that this special assistance will be given to those who are actually in need.

Initially, some 3,000 returnee women workers will be given this special assistance, he added.

He also said a loan of Tk 146 crore has already been disbursed through the Probashi Kallyan Bank for the rehabilitation of workers who returned during the COVID-19 period.

Mentioning that new initiatives are being taken for the welfare of expatriate workers on the occasion of the ‘Mujib Year’ and the golden jubilee of independence of the country, the minister said a dormitory and briefing center would be set up near the airport for their (workers) temporary stay while traveling abroad.
