Water laboratories being set up in every district to provide safe water: Tajul

DHAKA, March 22, 2021 (BSS) – Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam today said water laboratories are being set up in each district to provide quality and safe water to all the people of the country.

Urging all to be aware of the importance of water and prevent wastage, he said, “Water laboratories are being set up in each district to provide quality and safe water to all the people of the country.”

He said this while addressing a seminar on the occasion of World Water Day-2021 organized by the Department of Public Health Engineering at a hotel in the capital, said a press release.

The minister said the lab was being set up to check whether the quality of the water to be supplied to the people was pure and whether the water contained harmful substances without the required ingredients.

“In many cases we waste a lot of water unnecessarily…. We need to be more aware of the use of water,” he said.

“Bangladesh is an agricultural country. Besides, a lot of industries are being established as a result of massive economic development, which naturally increasing the use of water, so, if we are not careful about the use of water as a whole, there could be a severe water crisis,” he added.

Speaking as the special guest, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Swapan Bhattacharya said the government is working hard to achieve improved water supply, sanitation and hygiene in the country. They hoped that the country will be able to deal with the adverse effects of climate change through sustainable water management.

Professor Emeritus Dr Ainun Nishat presented the keynote address at the event.

In addition, WASA Managing Director Taksim A. Khan, Water Aid Country Director Hasin Jahan, representatives from the World Health Organization and UNICEF, and the Swedish Ambassador spoke, among others.
