Proper service increases enthusiasm for tax payment: Tajul

DHAKA, Mar 21, 2021 (BSS) – Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam today urged the local government institutions to become more people-friendly and ensure good service, as this will make the citizen’s willing to pay tax accordingly.

“The local government institutions must get involved with the people more. Because only good quality service can make the people keen to pay taxes in return for services,” Tajul said while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled ‘Beyond Covid-19: City Corporation (Local Govt) Fiscal Space’ of ‘Capacity Development of City Corporation’ (C4C) project here, said a press release.

Calling upon the mayors to play a greater role in tax collection as well as various activities to make the city corporations self-sufficient in self-financing, the minister said, “People must know that roads will be paved with their tax money, the city will be cleaned, waste will be managed, healthcare, education and social security will be ensured. Only then they will feel responsible to pay taxes accordingly.”

Lauding the role of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in leading the country to achieve a per capita income of $2100 despite the pandemic situation, the minister called upon the citizens and local government institution officials to come forward from their individual positions to fulfill the action plans taken by the PM to take the country forward, said the release.

Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy and Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Jahangir Alam spoke as special guests at the function presided over by Senior Secretary, Local Government Department, Helaluddin Ahmed.

Representatives of development partner organizations supporting the project and representatives of 12 city corporations of the country were also present on the occasion, among others.
