DU’s role during Liberation War is incomparable: Speaker

DHAKA, March 20, 2021 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury today said the role of Dhaka University played during all the movements including the Liberation war is incomparable and extraordinary as its students community came forwards during the movements leaving the illusion of life.

“The pioneering role of the university’s students, played during the Liberation War responding to the call of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is a unique and extraordinary achievement”, she said.

“We have to go forward instilling this achievement and spirit,” she furthered.

She was addressing an international conference titled ‘Independence movement: Dhaka University in freedom and struggle’ at university’s Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban this evening.

The Speaker said during the Language movement, students of the university sacrificed their life leaving the illusion of life amid the firing of police, which led to the ultimate victory during Liberation war.

The student-teacher community of the varsity played an important role during the war following Bangabandhu’s call for liberation from inequality-injustice-exploitation and economic oppression, she added.

Dhaka University Alumni Association (DUAA) organised the conference as part of its series of international conferences marking the birth centenary of the university.

Bangabandhu chair of DU and Former Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Atiur Rahman presented the keynote speech in the conference.

DUAA president AK Azad presided over the program while Power, energy and mineral water resources advisor to Prime Minister Dr Tawfiq E Elahi Chowdhury Bir Bikram addressed as special guest in the conference, conducted by Khandaker Mokaddem Hossain.
