Rohingyas get community centre to solve their social problems

DHAKA, March 15, 2021(BSS)- In a bid to solve their own social problems, a community centre was opened for Rohingyas at Kutu Palong camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar district today.

Through the centre under the Community-Based Protection (CBP) programme, steps would be taken so that Rohingyas can protect themselves and solve their own social problems themselves, said a press release.

Camp-in-charge Kazi Shamim inaugurated the centre at no. 18 camp.

BRAC constructed the centre supported by United Nations High Commission for Refugee (UNHCR).

The centre will focus on four roles in regard to community centre, information service, community group and community outreach member.

Earlier, BRAC constructed such 10 community-based centres in Teknaf and Ukhiya upazilas between 2017 and 2020, it added.

A total of 53,498 people received services from those centres till 2020 through awareness programme on radio and construction of audio-visual and recreation centres.

Besides, 45,133 people were provided with information service.

At present, about 1500 volunteers are working to improve the condition of Rohingyas.

Protection Officer of Community Based Unit of UNHCR Takashi Mori, Programme Head of HCMP of BRAC Roberts Sila Muthini, Team Lead of CBP Sharmin Akhter, Deputy Project Managers of CBP of the HCMP Borhan Mahmud, Imran Azad and Tahmina Sultana, among others, attended the function.
