Historic 7 March observed in Bangladesh missions abroad

DHAKA, March 8, 2021 (BSS) – Bangladesh missions abroad have observed the historic day of 7th March, recalling the fiery speech of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman that motivated the Bengalee nation to join the liberation war and win the independence of Bangladesh in 1971.

The Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC and Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN) observed the historic 7th March with patriotic zeal on Sunday, remembering Bangabandhu’s iconic speech, according to messages received here today.

The Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC, with the support of the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs of the US State Department, organised a webinar on Sunday to commemorate the historic March 7 speech delivered by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The event was participated by high government officials, academia, diplomats, think-tanks and media personnel from Bangladesh and the US.

After welcome remarks by Bangladesh Ambassador to the US Shahidul Islam, Professor Dr Syed Anwar Husain delivered the keynote address on Bangabandhu’s life and ideals attaching a particular focus to the 7th March speech.

Ambassador Tariq A Karim, South Asia Analyst Seth Oldmixon and US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller were among the panel speakers at the webinar.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam joined the webinar as the chief guest, while acting Assistant Secretary of Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs of the US Department of State Dean Thompson as the special guest.

To mark the day, Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN organised a discussion and offered a special prayer, seeking eternal peace of departed souls of Bangabandhu and his family members who embraced martyrdom on August 15, 1975.

Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN Rabab Fatima delivered welcome speech at the discussion. At the beginning of the discussion, a documentary on Bangabandhu’s 7 March speech was screened.

Bangladesh missions in Vienna of Austria, Amman of Jordan and Islamabad of Pakistan and Ottawa of Canada also observed the day through various programmes, including holding discussions, placing wreaths at the portraits of Bangabandhu, paying tributes to the Farther of the Nation and screening the historic 7 March speech.
