Unarmed Bangalees transformed into armed ones thru March 7 Speech: Hasan

CHATTOGRAM, March 6, 2021 (BSS) – Awami League (AL) Joint General Secretary and Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said Bangalees were an unarmed nation and they were transformed into an armed one being inspired with the March 7 speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

At a mammoth rally at the Racecourse Maidan, now the Suhrawardy Udyan, on that day, he said, Bangabandhu declared “Ebarer sangram amader muktir sangram, ebarer sangram swadhinatar sangram (The Struggle this time is the struggle for our independence, the struggle this time is a struggle for freedom)”.

Dr Hasan said this while addressing a discussion organised by Chattogram North District AL at Bangabandhu hall of Chattogram Press Club this noon marking the historic March 7 speech.

Speaking as the chief guest, he said no one in the history of the world has given such an appealing and inspiring speech like Bangabandhu.

“Bangabandhu did not have any note in his speech on March 7, he has spontaneously said. There are many speeches in the world that are very meaningful. But, in his speech, Bangabandhu transformed an unarmed nation into armed one and actually declared the independence,” the minister added.

He said after Bangabandhu’s speech, Pakistan’s intelligence agency reported that Sheikh Mujib had in fact declared the independence of the East Pakistan.

But, he is not going to be accused of declaring independence due to his strategic words, he added.

“This speech inspired the reporters and the youth that day. People still make a pause whenever they hear this speech, so it is a rare speech in the history of the world,” Hasan added.

He said this speech does not belong to a particular party, but it is a property of the whole nation.

The Unesco has recognised the historic 7th March Speech of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as part of the world’s documentary heritage, Hasan said.

He said Bangabandhu in his fiery speech on March 7 in 1971 called on the freedom-loving Bangalees to wage a movement against the Pakistani rulers.

Chaired by Chattogram North District AL President and Jilla Parisad Chairman MA Salam, the discussion was addressed, among others, by researcher Shamsul Haque, Chattogram North District AL General Secretary Sheikh Mohammad Ataur Rahman, vice presidents Prof Mohammad Moin Uddin, Advocate Fakhruddin Chowdhury, Abul Kalam Azad, and ATM Peyarul Islam, AL leaders Moin Uddin Rashed, Jasim Uddin, Aftab Uddin Ahmed, Swajan Kumar Talukder and Abdullah Al Baker Bhuiyan and North District Krishak League President Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.

Hasan said the nation was kept in dark about the landmark 7th March speech after brutal killing of Bangabandhu on August 15, 1975.

When his worthy daughter and AL President Sheikh Hasina formed government following a victory in 1996 general election, she focused on the historic speech, he said.

Mentioning that propaganda is being spread against AL government through social media, Hasan urged the AL leaders and workers to promote the development and achievements of the government more in social media.

Congratulating the BNP for observance of the March 7, he said: “After so long, they have come to their senses”.

“BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul said that the March 7 is history, we have to accept this history. I shall tell Fakhrul that they will admit the rest distorted histories. Then the nation will appreciate you,” he added.

The information ministry said BNP joint secretary general Rizvi Ahmed conducted secret torch procession yesterday. “I will tell them that there will be no benefit in secret processions and secret attacks on people. If you really want to go to the people, then accept the real history and apologise to the people for such misconduct,” he added.

“The whole world, including India and Pakistan, realised that Bangladesh is moving ahead. But, you (BNP) could not realise it yet,” he said.

Hasan said the country gets the final recommendation from the United Nations for its graduation to a developing country from the least-developed country (LDC) status.

He said Bangabandhu’s daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is distributing houses to the homeless people.

“She distributed about 70,000 houses among the homeless people in a single day,” he added.

“I don’t know if any other country in the world has given houses to 70,000 families in a single day,” he said.

Hasan said Bangladesh was a country of food-deficit, but now it becomes a food-surplus country.

He said people are not seen in Bangladesh today wearing torn clothes and walking on bare feet.

Actually, Bangladesh would go a long way if BNP would shun factional and negative politics and would not patronise militancy and anti-liberation forces, the AL joint general secretary.

On Mushtaq’s death, the information minister said anyone’s death in prison is really unexpected and undesirable and the death of Mushtaq is unexpected too.

Terming Mushtaq’s death as “normal’, he said the probe body did not find any negative reason behind the death.

The Information Minister said under the leadership of Bangabandhu’s daughter, Bangladesh is moving forward.

“She has evolved the country from a low-income country to a middle-income one. In the year of our golden jubilee and the birth centenary of Bangabandhu, the United Nations has given final recommendation to Bangladesh as a middle income country. This is the biggest achievement for our country under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina,” he added.
