Australia to assist Bangladesh in improving quality of higher education

DHAKA, Mar 2, 2021 (BSS) – The Australian government has expressed its
keen interest to provide necessary assistance and quality assurance system to
Bangladesh for improvement of the country’s higher education.

Representatives of the Australian Department of Education, Skills and
Employment today expressed the interest at a virtual meeting with University
Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, said a press release here.

At the meeting, UGC Secretary (Additional Charge) Dr Ferdous Zaman
presented an overall picture of higher education in Bangladesh.

In his presentation, Dr Ferdous said that the Bangladesh government had
taken multifaceted steps in the past few years to improve the quality of
higher education in the country.

“A number of specialized universities had been established and new
departments were launched in those universities to produce skilled manpower
to meet the demands of current labour market,” he added.

Noting that Bangladesh Accreditation Council had been established to
oversee the quality of education, the UGC secretary said information
management system of higher education in Bangladesh is also being modernized,
which will help in evaluating the education system of the country.

Councilor of Education and Research at the Australian High Commission in
New Delhi Brett Galt-Smith delivered another presentation at the meeting on
the Australian Education and Quality Assurance System and assured the UGC of
providing support for the promotion of higher education in Bangladesh.

At the meeting, Director of Multilateral Policy of the International
Partnership Branch Jane Azurin focused on Australia’s Qualifications
Recognition System.

He called upon the UGC to provide necessary information for updating the
education profile of Bangladesh.

UGC Director (Additional Charge) for Information Management, Communication
and Training Division Mohammad Maksudur Rahman Bhuiyan presented a paper
describing the Qualifications Recognition System in Bangladesh and the
various professional organizations associated with it.

Professor of Khulna University Morsaline Billah and Councilor of the
Bangladesh High Commission in Australia Tahleel Moon also spoke at the
meeting.
