DU observes historic ‘Flag Hoisting Day’

DHAKA, March 2, 2021 (BSS) – The Dhaka University (DU) authorities today observed the historic ‘Flag Hoisting Day’ on the campus in small scale in view of the coronavirus pandemic.

On March 2 in 1971, independent Bangladesh’s first national flag, with a yellow map of Bangladesh inside a red disc in a green ambience, was hoisted amid cheers from the students at a massive gathering on the Dhaka University campus.

Marking the historic day, DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman hoisted national flag on the premises of Bat-Tala in front of Arts Building on the campus.

Teachers and students of Music Department performed the national anthem on the occasion.

Paying glowing tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Prof Akhtaruzzaman said March is the month of independence, sovereignty and pride as the nation had witnessed the most significant events in its history in March, 1971.

On March 2 in 1971, Bangladesh’s first national flag was hoisted, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered his landmark speech on March 7 and he declared the country’ independence on March 26, he said.

DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (academic) Prof ASM Maksud Kamal, Treasurer Prof Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed and Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) General Secretary Prof Nizamul Haque Bhuiyan were present on the occasion, among others.

Coordinator of the programme and Arts Faculty Dean Prof Abu Md Delwar Hossain gave the welcome address.

Deans of different faculties, provosts of halls, teachers, students, officers and employees of the university joined the function.
