Govt formulates draft National Marine Fisheries Policy

DHAKA, Feb 28, 2021 (BSS) – The government has formulated the draft of the National Marine Fisheries Policy aiming to explore the country’s marine potential.

This information was revealed at a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Fisheries and Livestock Ministry at the Sangsad Bhaban here today with committee chairman Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu in the chair.

The meeting was informed that the National Marine Fisheries Policy was formulated to conserve and manage marine resources sustainably, and achieve the expected growth through exploring marine fisheries.

Committee members – Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim, Choto Monir, Nazma Akhter and Shamima Akther Khanam – were present at the meeting, an official press release said.

During the meeting, they discussed short-, medium- and long-term work plans on blue economy.

The meeting was also informed that the draft marine fisheries management plan was formulated under the Sustainable Coastal and Marine Fisheries Project, while a pilot project was taken to explore tuna and other pelagic fish from deep sea.

The fisheries and livestock secretary, the chiefs of different agencies under the ministry and officials of the parliament secretariat were present.
