Initiative taken for double railway track: Sujan

DHAKA, Feb 25, 2021 (BSS) – Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan today said the government took initiatives to build double railway track on different routes of Bangladesh Railway (BR) aimed at ensuring its time schedule and quality services.

“It is important to build double railway track to ensure timely operation of Bangladesh Railway with safety,” he said this while inaugurating improvement of wash management and mutual learning at his ministry conference room.

The minister said railway stations are being renovated and modernized to provide quality services to passengers, adding, “The length and height of platforms are being expanded.”

Sujan mentioned that steps have been taken to clean the toilets including inside of the trains. As part of the passenger services, a joint venture agreement was signed with Water Aid Bangladesh for construction and renovation of public toilets.

Bangladesh Railway and Water Aid will construct and renovate of public latrines having modern facilities adjacent to railway stations, he said.

“It is hoped that by learning from these, it will be possible to modernize and improve public toilets of 50 stations in Bangladesh within a year,” he said.

The minister hoped that Bangladesh Railway and Water Aid Bangladesh, will be a successful model for management of three public toilets and would work together to improve quality of passenger services and mutual learning programmes in the future.

With railways secretary Md Selim Reza in the chair, the function was addressed, among others, by director general of Bangladesh Railway Dhirendra Nath Majumder, country director of Water Aid Hasin Jahan and Senior decentralization and wash specialist Shantanu Lahiri.
