West Indies collapse against Bangladesh
KINGSTON, Jamaica, July 14, 2018 (AFP) – Bangladesh captain Shakib al Hasan wrecked the West Indies top-order batting on Saturday although the home side remained in command as the second test reached lunch on the third day in Jamaica.
The left-arm spinner snared the first four wickets but the Caribbean squad recovered from the depths of 64 for five to reach the interval at 108 for six in their second innings, an overall lead of 313 runs.
Roston Chase, the only batsman to get into the twenties so far on a dry pitch, resumes in the afternoon on 23 alongside wicketkeeper-batsman Shane Dowrich, with the West Indies looking to extend their innings and an already considerable overall lead, before unleashing the bowlers to push for a second comprehensive victory and clean sweep of the brief series.
Shakib continued where he left off late on day two when he dismissed first innings century-maker Kraigg Brathwaite with the first ball he bowled.
Devon Smith, whose place in the team continues to be a topic of discussion, added fuel to that debate when he was the first to fall on the second morning, drawn out of his crease and stumped neatly by Nurul Hasan for 16.
Nightwatchman Keemo Paul and Kieran Powell opted to counter-attack and added 25 runs before Nurul was again called upon to exhibit his clinical glovework when Paul heaved at Shakib and the wicketkeeper lifted the bails with the debutant found marginally short of his ground.
Two more wickets fell in the space of 11 runs as Powell was trapped leg-before to give Shakib his fourth wicket in a row.
There was also little doubt about the lbw verdict given against Shai Hope off the bowling of the other left-arm spinner, Taijul Islam. Chase joined Shimron Hetmyer and the pair continued to play positively, occasionally living dangerously but advancing the score towards the three-figure mark.
Their stand was worth an enterprising 33 runs when seamer Abu Jayed achieved the breakthrough, removing the attacking Hetmyer lbw minutes before the interval.
