DHAKA, Sept 29, 2017 (BSS) – Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) today called for making efforts through economic diplomacy along with the ongoing political diplomacy to solve the Rohingya crisis.

“We think the whole problem will not be solved through political diplomacy alone. Apart from political diplomacy, economic diplomacy will also be good for solving the crisis,” said former BEA president and eminent economist Professor Dr Abul Barakat at a press conference at the National Press Club in the city.

BEA organised the press conference in protest against Rohingya persecution in Myanmar. Among others, BEA Secretary General Dr Jamaluddin Ahmed was present at the press conference.

Urging the government to create opinion across the world regarding the Rohingya crisis, Barkat, a Dhaka University Economic Department professor, said in addition to economic issues, the crisis has environmental impacts too.

He urged the Myanmar government to stop massacre in Rakhine State and called upon the world community to exert diplomatic pressure on the Myanmar government to take back the Rohingyas from Bangladesh.

He also called upon the government, media and all people of all strata of the country to take multi-dimensional programmes and long-term action plans to create world opinion to solve the crisis and return the Rohingyas to their country.

In this case, expatriate Bangladeshis can play an active role, he added.
