Research stressed to face challenges of Fourth Industrial Revolution

DHAKA, Jan 27, 2021 (BSS) – The speakers underscored the need for research works to analyze the challenges and impacts of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) in the country.

They came up with the remarks in a meeting held at the office premise of Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority yesterday.

Managing Director (Secretary) of high-tech park authority Hosne Ara Begum, Chairperson of Business Initiative Leading Development (BUILD) Abul Kasem Khan and BUILD Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ferdaus Ara Begum, among others, were present at the meeting, a press release said.

At the beginning of the meeting, Hosne Ara Begum raised concern over impact of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) on the labor market of the country.

She said that it is very important to do proper research works to address these challenges.

She gave her direction on the next activities of newly formed 4IR and information and communications technology (ICT) thematic working committee of BUILD, which is co-chaired by BHTPA MD and Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) President.

She said that a second meeting could be held at end of February 2021.

BUILD Chairperson said that re-skilling will very important to face the upcoming challenges of 4IR.

Terming Bangladesh as a tech-savvy country, he said it (Bangladesh) is naturally giving the government a demographic advantage as it has 60 percent efficient young people under the age of 33 years which can be utilized for the development of the country in the days to come.

Stressing on research and innovation, he said that all concerned need to invest in research innovation and skills.

He urged extensive research work for understanding the adaptation process of 4IR and automation in the public and private sector.

Following examples of India and their success in ICT, BUILD Chair said:”We need to engage our Bangladeshi Diaspora working in different ICT sectors around the world for shaping our 4IR strategy.”

BUILD CEO Ferdaus Ara Begum urged for initiating a research work on the sector-based impact of 4IR in Bangladesh as the impact of 4IR is not same for every sector.

“We need sector-based study to understand the scenario,” she added.

She said that BUILD’s Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and Information and communications technology (ICT) working committee is going to start a gap analysis of Bangladesh in the field of 4IR with the help of e-CAB, BASIS and BHTPA.

This study will help the authorities concerned understand the country’s position in 4IR across the globe, she added.
