Govt for giving silk sector a new lease of life : Dastagir

RAJSHAHI, Jan 10, 2021 (BSS)- Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi (Bir Protik), today said the present government under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is committed to revamp the silk sector for the sake of protecting its magnificent heritage.

“Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had founded the Bangladesh Sericulture Board in 1974 to flourish the silk sector in Bangladesh. So, we have to revitalize the traditional silk sector to uphold the memory of Bangabandhu,” he said this while addressing a view-sharing meeting as chief guest in Rajshahi city.

Bangladesh Sericulture Development Board (BSDB) hosted the meeting at its conference hall discussing and devising ways and means on how to revive the prestigious sector collectively.

Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP, Advocate Adiba Anjum Mita, MP, and Secretary to the Textiles and Jute Ministry Lokeman Hossain Mian also spoke.

BSDB Director General Abdul Hakim presided over the meeting.

Minister Dastagir Gazi asked the BSDB officials and others concerned to put in their best efforts to make the state level silk sector profitable for the sake of protecting its existence.

He said there is no way but to down the cost of production to make the sector profitable. It is very essential to take the sector forward through facing all existing challenges.

“We have to build the silk sector as a model to inspire and promote the private sector,” he added.

On the occasion, BSDB Director General Abdul Hakim gave an illustration of the present silk sector along with its prospects and challenges in his multimedia presentation.

Later, the minister went round different sections of the Sericulture Research and Training Institute and the silk factory to see for himself their activities.

Earlier, the minister also visited silk block and extension area and Chawki centre at Mohanpur Upazila in the district.
