Momen seeks Omani investment in Bangladesh’s economic zones

DHAKA, Jan 6, 2020 (BSS) – Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has
sought Omani investment in the country’s economic zones and
infrastructural development, saying that the return on investment is
much higher in Bangladesh compared to neighboring countries.

Dr Momen sought the investment during a telephone conversation with
his Oman counterpart Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi today, said a
press release.

The Omani foreign minister emphasized on exchanging visits of the
two country’s businessmen and identifying the sectors of mutual
cooperation.

During the conversation, Dr Momen invited Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin
Tariq Al Said to visit Bangladesh on the occasion of the birth
centenary celebration of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman and golden jubilee of the country’s independence.

The foreign minister thanked his Omani counterpart as the Oman
government took care of 700,000 expatriate Bangladeshis during the
ongoing Corona situation and none had to lose job.

He also appreciated the Omani foreign minister as they allowed
40,000 Bangladeshis, who got stuck in the country due to COVID-19
situation, to return to their workplaces in Oman after resumption of
the air flight.

Dr Momen mentioned that Qatar and Saudi Arabia have been able to
reach an understanding with the support from Oman.

Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi lauded the
Bangladesh government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina for dealing with the COVID-19 situation successfully.

He said the two counters can help each other in dealing with the
COVID-19, including sharing information.

Noting that the mutual friendly relationship between the two
countries is strengthening gradually, the Omani foreign minister
appreciated the role of expatriate Bangladeshis in Oman.

According to the press release, the foreign ministers of the both
countries agreed to hold the Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) between
the two countries in the first half of this year, which would discuss
different bilateral issues of mutual interests.

An agreement on visa exemption for the official and diplomatic
passport holders will be signed between the two countries soon, Momen
said, adding that Bangladesh will decide on signatory of the agreement
soon on the country side as Oman has already nominated under secretary
of its foreign ministry to sign the agreement.

Momen urged Oman to import Bangladeshi jute products for use instead
of polythene.

The Omani foreign minister appreciated the overall development of
the Bangladesh including rise of GDP. Sayyid Badr also appreciated
Bangladesh’s good relations with its neighboring countries.

He assured Bangladesh of that Oman’s continued support for
repatriation of the Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar.
