DU Prof Abdullah Al-Ma’ruf wins Sheikh Hamad int’l award

DHAKA, Dec 22, 2020 (BSS) – Abdullah Al-Ma’ruf, professor of Dhaka
University (DU) Arabic department, has won the prestigious ‘Sheikh
Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding’ for his
work from Arabic into the Bengali language.

The Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International
Understanding, known as the Nobel of Translation, announced the
winners of the sixth session of the award on December 20 during a
virtual ceremony, according to a press release.

For the first time Bengali language has been selected as one of the
languages of the Achievement Award for this year. The professor will
get one lakh USD as the winner of Achievement Awards in Bengali.

This year, two lakh US dollars was set as award prize for the
winners of premier languages including English while 1 lakh USD was
set for general languages, known as achievement awards, as award.

More than three hundred competitors from 42 Arab and Islamic
countries took part in the competition while the name of the winners
was finalized through evaluation of experts.

In general category, Pashto, Swedish, Hausa and Korean language has
been included this year for the Achievement Award besides Bengali.

Abdullah Al-Ma’ruf is a researcher, writer and also a permanent
representative of Bangladesh to OIC International Islamic Fiqh Academy
(IIFA).
