Expired drugs worth 30 cr destroyed, fined Tk 7 cr: HC report

DHAKA, 14 Dec, 2020 (BSS) – From January to November this year,
expired drugs worth Tk 30,14,22,186 have been withdrawn and destroyed.

Besides, a fine of Tk 7,26,10,203 has been levied through a mobile
court for storing expired, counterfeit, unregistered and adulterated
drugs from January to October.

Deputy Attorney General ABM Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar told BSS that
a report of the Department of Drug Administration stating the
information was presented today in a High Court Division Bench
comprising Justice Md Khasruzzaman and Justice Md Mahmud Hasan
Talukder.

The report also stated that 1,437 cases were filed in the mobile
court, said he.

The court has directed to submit the latest report on the campaign
against expired and adulterated drugs within the next three months,
added the official.

During the hearing of a writ petition, the High Court directed to
take necessary steps to stop the storage and sale of expired drugs
across the country and to withdraw or destroy expired drugs.

Following the order, the court issued the report.

Manzur Mohammad Shahriar, deputy director of the Consumer Rights
Protection Department, said at an event on May 10, 2019 that expired
drugs are kept in 93 percent of pharmacies in Dhaka city.

Mahfuzur Rahman Milon, the executive director of the Justice Watch
Foundation, filed the writ petition on June 17 of that year, adding
that the report was published in a newspaper.
