Coronavirus toll at 1100 GMT Monday

PARIS, Dec 14, 2020 (BSS/AFP) – The novel coronavirus has killed at least
1,612,297 people since the outbreak emerged in China last December, according
to an AFP tally compiled from official sources at 1100 GMT Monday.

At least 72,166,120 cases of coronavirus have been registered. Of these,
at least 46,576,400 are now considered recovered.

The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and
information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a
fraction of the actual number of infections.

Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases.

On Sunday, 7,316 new deaths and 528,960 new cases were recorded worldwide.
Based on latest reports, the countries with the most new deaths were United
States with 1,396 new deaths, followed by Italy with 484 and Russia with 450.

The United States is the worst-affected country with 299,191 deaths from
16,257,366 cases. At least 6,298,082 people have been declared recovered.

After the US, the hardest-hit countries are Brazil with 181,402 deaths
from 6,901,952 cases, India with 143,355 deaths from 9,884,100 cases, Mexico
with 113,953 deaths from 1,250,044 cases, and Italy with 64,520 deaths from
1,843,712 cases.

The country with the highest death rate is Belgium with 155 fatalities per
100,000 inhabitants, followed by Peru with 111, Italy with 107, and Spain
with 102.

Europe overall has suffered 480,650 deaths from 22,228,392 cases, Latin
America and the Caribbean 471,393 deaths from 14,049,321 infections, and the
United States and Canada 312,590 deaths from 16,715,892 cases.

Asia has reported 205,612 deaths from 13,114,367 cases, the Middle East
84,779 deaths from 3,646,531 cases, Africa 56,331 deaths from 2,381,056
cases, and Oceania 942 deaths from 30,561 cases.

As a result of corrections by national authorities or late publication of
data, the figures updated over the past 24 hours may not correspond exactly
to the previous day’s tallies.
