Bhashan Char’s Rohingyas may go to Myanmar first: FM

DHAKA, Dec 7, 2020 (BSS) – Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen today said relocation of Rohingyas to Bhashan Char is temporary and it would not make any impact on the repatriation process of the displaced people to Myanmar.

“We have made this arrangement for a short period. May be these people (relocated Rohingyas) will go back to Myanmar in the first batch when Myanmar will start taking back Rohingyas from Bangladesh,” he told reporters today.

The government recently relocated over 1,600 Rohingyas from congested Cox’s Bazar camps to Bhashan Char, an Island in Bay of Bengal around 52 kilometres from Chattogram city.

On the relocation, he said, the government’s position was very clear and transparent from the very beginning that any relocation would be entirely on a voluntary basis.

As per the mandate, Dr Momen said the United Nations should help Rohingyas wherever they have been sheltered in Bangladesh.

“They (the UN) should follow their mandate. It’s their mandate to help them (Rohingyas). It doesn’t matter where they (Rohingyas) are staying,” he said.

The foreign minister hoped that the UN will play its role to support Rohingyas those took shelter in Bangladesh.

After relocating Rohingyas to Bhashan Char, the foreign ministry said the government relocated only those Rohingyas to Bhashan Char, who voluntarily expressed their willingness for the relocation.
