Registrar Mamun put on 2-day remand over ASP Shipon death

DHAKA, Nov 17, 2020 (BSS) – A court here today placed registrar Dr
Abduallh Al-Mamun of the National Institute of Mental Health and
Hospital on a 2-day remand in a case filed over the death of Senior
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Anisul Karim Shipon.

ASP Shipon died of severe assaults by employees of the Mind Aid
Mental Health Hospital in capital’s Adabar area on November 9.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahidul Islam today passed the order
of a two-day remand after Investigating Officer (IO) of Adabar Police
Station Inspector (Operations) Faruk Mollah sought a 10-day remand for
more quizzing in the incidents.

Earlier, Tejgaon police arrested Mamun today.

ASP Anisul Karim was admitted to the Mind Aid Hospital with severe
mental problems on November 9 around 12:15 pm and he died shortly
after being admitted there.

CCTV footage showed that some hospital staffers physically
assaulted Anisul after taking him inside a room. He was beaten in the
hospital’s aggressive management room.

He was not admitted even after being unconscious for a long time.
At around 12 noon on that day, the people of the hospital took him to
the National Heart Institute. The doctor on duty there said that
Shipon died before he was taken to the hospital.

Shipon died at ‘Mind Aid Hospital’ some moments after he went to the
hospital for treatment.

His family members claimed that the hospital staffers beat him to
death. Police have also collected CCTV footage from the hospital of
the incident.

It was seen that around 11:55 pm, police officer Shipon was dragged
into a room by several staff. He was thrown to the ground by six
employees of the hospital. Then, two more employees dressed in blue
grabbed his leg.

At that time, two employees on the side of the head were hitting
him with their elbows.

Arif Mahmud, manager of the hospital, was standing next to him.
Anisul’s hands were tied behind her back with a piece of blue cloth.
When Anisul was turned upside down four minutes later, his body was
numb.

An employee then splashed water on his face. Anisul Karim was not
moving even then. The staff then cleaned the floor of the room.

Seven minutes later, a woman wearing a white apron entered the
room. The door of the room was closed for 11 minutes. She pumped his
chest in 13 minutes and failed to regain his sense.

Earlier, Shipon was treated by Registrar Dr Abdullah Al Mamun and
he referred ASP Shipon to Mind Aid Hospital. He was arrested on
charges of involvement in the killing.

Victim’s father Faijuddin Ahmed filed a murder case with Adabor
Police Station, accusing 15 people, including five shareholders of the
hospital.
