Proper agronomic management enhances tea production: experts

RANGPUR, Nov 11, 2020 (BSS) – Experts at a training workshop today
stressed on proper agronomic management adopting scientific methods
and latest technologies to enhance production of quality tea leaves
and earn more profits.

They view this at the workshop titled ‘Plucking, pruning and pests’
management in tea plantation’ arranged by Bangladesh Tea Board (BTB)
at village Charol in Baliadangi upazila of Thakurgaon district, a
press release said tonight.

The workshop was arranged for 61 farmers to expand small-scale tea
cultivation under the ‘Expansion of Small Holding Tea Cultivation in
Northern Bangladesh Project’ of BTB by reaching latest scientific
methods and tea related services to farmers.

Senior Scientific Officer (Entomology) of BTB and its Project
Director of Northern Bangladesh Project at Panchagarh regional office
Dr. Mohammad Shameem Al Mamun chaired the event.

Acting Director of Srimangal Project Development Unit of BTB Dr. AKM
Rafikul Haque attended the workshop as the chief guest.

Chief Scientific Officer of Bangladesh Tea Research Institute Dr.
Md. Taufiq Ahammad attended the event as the special guest.

Assistant Farm Superintendent at Panchagarh regional office of BTB
and its In-charge Officer for Thakurgaon district Agriculturist
Mohammad Sayedul Haque moderated the workshop.

The experts discussed agronomic management of tea nursery, soil
quality and fertilisation, scientific methods of tea cultivation,
plucking, pruning and tipping, management of tea insects, diseases and
weeds in tea cultivation.

They said the plain land of the five sub-Himalayan northern
districts of Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Nilphamari and
Lalmonirhat is highly fertile and climatic condition favourable for
tea cultivation.

Dr Mamun suggested the participating small-scale tea-growers for
cultivating the cash crop on plain lands adopting scientific methods
to further enhance tea production and reap more profits than many
other crops.

The chief guest said tea cultivation on the small-scale basis on
the plain lands has become popular among local farmers unveiling a new
horizon of economic prospect for them for faster economic development
in these five northern districts.
