Water transport workers’ strike likely to be resolved today: Khalid

DHAKA, Oct 22, 2020 (BSS) – State Minister for shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury hoped that the ongoing countrywide strike of water transport workers would be resolved within today.

“Discussion between BIWTA, department of shipping, vessel owners and workers is going on. . . hopefully the strike would be solved within today,” he told media after a meeting with newly appointed Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami at his secretariat office, said a press release.

Terming the demand of water transport workers as logical, Khalid said the previous demand of the water transport workers was solved through discussion.

“Relation between owners and workers has to be amicable. . . We would solve the existing problem through proper coordination between owners and workers,” he said.

He said the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is taking the country forward and the development spree will continue.

During the meeting, Khalid and Doraiswami discussed about different bilateral issues such as Paira port, Mongla port and Ashuganj port.

The state minister said Bangladesh wants to strengthen the existing relation with India for betterment of the people of two countries.

Shipping secretary Mohammed Mezbah Uddin was also present.
