Five to die over gang-rape of Tangail madrasa student

TANGAIL, Oct 15, 2020 (BSS) – A special tribunal here today sentenced five to death for gang raping a madrasa student in Bhuapur upazila in Tangail in 2012.

“Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Khaleda Yasmin pronounced the judgement, also fined the convicts Taka one lakh each. The court handed down death penalty under section 9(3)/30 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention (Amendment) Act,” special public prosecutor Advocate AKM Nasimul Akter told BSS.

The convicts are- Sagar Chandra, Sujon Moni Rishi, Rajan, Sanjit and Gopi Chandra Shil. Of the five convicts, Sanjit and Gopi Chandra Shil were present during the judgement, as the other three went into hiding after coming out of jail on bail.

According to the case documents, the convicts abducted the girl from Saldair Bridge area in Bhuapur on January 15, 2012, and took her to the house of Rajan in Modhupur area. There they raped her and left her unconscious on the bank of river Bongshai on January 18, 2012.

Victim’s brother with the help of locals rescued the girl and took her to Bhuapur Police Station. The victim on January 19, 2012, filed the case against the five.

A total of 10 prosecution witnesses including the victim testified in the case.
