Rapist should get maximum punishment: Indira

DHAKA, Oct 7, 2020 (BSS) – State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Fazilatun Nesa Indira today said the people convicted for raping should be sentenced to death.

“If a rapist is proved guilty, he must get the maximum punishment,” she said.

Indira was speaking as the chief guest at a launching programme of a report titled ‘Ending Child Marriage: A Profile of Progress in Bangladesh’ at the Bangladesh Secretariat here today, said a press release..

“Rapists have no social, political or family identity and I would like to call on all educational institutions and society to boycott and expel rapists,” she said.

“The government is determined to completely prevent the abuse of women and children and their punishment will be ensured through speedy trial,” Indira added.

Inequality must be eliminated from society through the development of children, sexual harassment prevention committees have been set up in all educational institutions for the safety and security of girls, she said.

Senior Adviser to UNICEF Claudia Cappa from the United States presented the report at the programme while UNICEF country representative Veera Mendonca was present.

National Women’s Organization Chairman Begum Chemon Ara Tayyab, Additional Secretary Farida Parveen, Additional Secretary Mohiuddin Ahmed and Joint Secretary Mohammad Muhibuzzaman were present, among others.
