Agri land to be increased through river diversion: Zahid Faruk
LALMONIRHAT, Sept 26, 2020 (BSS) – Mentioning that Prime Minister has directed all concerned to take river diversion plan across the country to check erosion, State Minister for Water Resources Colonel (retd) Zahid Faruk today said agricultural land would be increased shortening the rivers by dredging.
“Agricultural land will be increased through river diversion as well as dredging rivers…We need a handsome amount of money in this regard and I have discussed with a number of foreign donors. Many countries have shown their interest,” he said.
He said this while visiting Teesta erosion-affected areas at Mahishkhocha union in Aditmari upazila here this morning, said a press release.
The state minister also assured local people of building an embankment in the area to protect them from river erosion.
He later inspected Gauripur Irrigation Project in Dinajpur and planted saplings there.
Additional Secretary of Ministry of Water Resources Mahmudul Islam, Director General of Water Development Board AM Aminul Haque, Chief Engineer of Water Development Board, Northern Region Jyoti Prasad Ghosh, Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Abu Jafar, Aditmari UNO Mansur Uddin were present.
