President for creating awareness on RTI Act

DHAKA, Sept 17, 2020 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid today urged the Information Commission of Bangladesh (ICB) to create awareness among the people on Right to Information(RTI) Act.

“If the people could be made aware of the law (Right to Information Act), it will help prevent corruption at all levels in the society and also check wastage of government resources,” he said.

The President said this when an ICB delegation led by Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) Mortuza Ahmed, submitted its annual report 2019 to him at Bangabhaban here this afternoon.

He termed the RTI Act as a very important tool for ensuring accountability and transparency in public (government) activities in all stages.

The delegation apprised the President of the various activities undertaken as part of the awareness campaign of the commission involving the grassroots people, President’s press secretary Joynal Abedin told BSS.

The CIC informed the President that the commission was making continuous efforts to create public awareness about the RTI Act at the grassroots level and various motivational programs are being carried out involving district, upazila and even union level government officials, people’s representatives and local dignitaries..

Referring to their ongoing activities even in the pandemic COVID-19 outbreak, Mortuza said virtual training programme is being carried out since the outbreak of the lethal disease.

Receiving the report, the head of the state expressed his satisfaction over the overall activities of the commission, suggesting them to strengthen its overall activities.

The delegation sought cooperation of the President in running the commission’s overall activities.

Secretary to the President Sampad Barua, military secretary Major General SM Shamim-Uz-Zaman, press secretary Md Joynal Abedin, and secretary (attached) Md Wahidul Islam Khan were also present.
