PM salvages an extreme poor couple of Lalmonirhat
DHAKA, Sept 12, 2020 (BSS) – In a show of generosity, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reached out to a financially weaker couple of Lalmonirhat district, sending a cow and cash money for them to help the family lift out of the curse of extreme poverty.
Soyful Islam, a poor farmer of Telipara village under Kaliganj upazila in Lalmonirhat, used to lead his life by producing mustard oil through traditional oil grinder ‘ghani’ for the last 25 years.
But Soyful could not afford to buy cows for the purpose and he himself used to pull the ghani instead of using cow or similar other cattle due to his financial insolvency. His wife Morsheda Begum cooperated her husband in this tough work as they had to pull the ghani for 5-6 hours in a day.
The suffering poor couple leads their five-member family with the income from the sale of mustard oil and mustard cake (Khoil) they extracted by pulling the ghani.
Some Bangla newspapers and online portals carried the report several days ago, depicting the agony of the struggling couple.
This news drew the attention of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, prompting her to gift a cow and Taka 10,000 for them for repairing the ghani and rearing the cow.
On behalf of the Prime Minister, Deputy Commissioner of Lalmonirhat Md Abu Zafar handed over the cow and Tk 10,000 to the family on Thursday last.
