Taskforce to remain vigilant against river encroachment: Khalid

DHAKA, Sept 6, 2020 (BSS) – State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury today said the taskforce on protection of navigability of rivers and keeping the natural flow of rivers will work for the interest of Dhaka dwellers and will remain vigilant against encroachers.

“The taskforce is working for the interest of Dhaka dwellers, not for an individual or group. We will ensure natural flow of rivers and remain watchful against river and canal encroachment,” he told a meeting of the taskforce at the ministry meeting room here.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Shipping Secretary Mohammad Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury joined the meeting, among others.

State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder, State Minister for Water Resources Zaheed Farooque, National River Conservation Commission Chairman Dr Muzibur Rahman Howlader, Water Resources Ministry Senior Secretary Kabir Bin Anwar and Information Secretary Kamrun Nahar joined it virtually.

Khalid said they will work to protect the rivers and canals in and around the capital Dhaka to restore its natural beauty.

In his address, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh laid emphasis on making coordinated efforts of all stakeholders to protect rivers and canals.

Old (Adi) Buriganga channel will be retrieved to increase the water flow in the river and reduce the water-logging problem in the city, he said.

The mayor said Kamrangichar is an inland and it will be turned into a beautiful area after retrieving the old Buriganga channel.

He said a significant change would also be brought in waste management soon.
