At least 11 dead, 36 missing in Nepal flood

KATHMANDU, Sept 3, 2020 (BSS/XINHUA) – At least 11 people died and 36 went missing in a massive flood on Bhuji stream at Dhorpatan Municipality in western Baglung district of Nepal on Wednesday night, government officials said.

“The flood caused by incessant rainfalls on the stream swept several settlements away along the stream, causing loss of several lives and properties,” Suresh Neupane, chief district officer at the District Administration Office, Baglung, told Xinhua on Thursday.

According to him, the local people and security personnel are searching for the missing ones even though continued rainfalls till Thursday afternoon made it difficult to carry out rescue operation.

The flood on the stream also damaged private and public properties.
“The flood swept away 130 houses in several locations along the stream,” Dev Kumar Nepali, Mayor at Dhorpatan Municipality told Xinhua on Thursday.

According to the officials, several roads, bridges, small hydropower projects and drinking water spouts in the area were badly damaged by the floods and landslides.

As a result, transportation service in the area, which is around 130 km away from district headquarters of Baglung, has been completely disrupted, they said.

Neupane who was on an observation mission to the incident site, said that he had to walk several hours to reach the site due to the damages on the road.
