Pranab Mukherjee to be remembered beyond geographical boundaries: Speakers
NEW DELHI, Sept 02, 2020 (BSS) – Speakers at a meeting today paid rich tribute to the memory of India’s former President Pranab Mukherjee saying that as a politician with clean image and a good human being he would be remembered forever beyond the geographical boundaries.
Taking part in the discussion on Pranab Mukherjee, who died on Monday following a brain surgery in a city hospital, they said his political wisdom and service to humanity has elevated his position as such height for which he became a popular personality among all beyond the political spectrum.
Mr. Mukherjee used to possess diversified knowledge and was thorough in different issues like finance, foreign affairs and security, they said adding his knowledge and political wisdom has turned him as an acclaimed statesman.
Bangladesh high commission in New Delhi organized the event to mark one-day mourning announced by Bangladesh government to pay respect to the memory of the veteran Indian politician Pranab Mukherjee, who played a very crucial role towards the cause of Independence Bangladesh in 1971.
Pranab Mukherjee, the then young Indian politician was campaigning across the world as a member of Indian delegation to gain international support for the Bangladesh’s War of Independence.
It was Pranab Mukherjee, who also raised his voice first at the Indian Rajha Sabha so that India could recognize the 1971 exile government led by Syed Nazrul Islam in absence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Paying rich tribute to Pranab Mukherjee, Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Mohammad Imran said he (Pranab Mukherjee) used to serve people not looking at the social position or the nationality. He served the humanity and so he is being remembered beyond the geographical boundaries of nation of states even after his death.
Imran said Bangladesh has lost a true friend at the death of Pranab Mukherjee as he used to play a crucial role during the Bangladesh’s Great War of Liberation in 1971.
During the post-liberation period, he said, Mr. Mukherjee has played an important role to take Dhaka-New Delhi relation to a new height.
Describing Pranab Mukherjee as a towering politician, an acclaimed statesman and a renowned scholar, he said he (Pranab) would be remembered alongside the Bengali luminaries like Ishwarchandra, Vidyasagar, Raja Ram Mohan Rai, Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vebekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose so far Bangladeshis and Bangalees are concerned.
Abhijit Roy, PS to Pranab Mukherjee and three renowned Indian journalists: Gautam Lahiri, Joyanta Ghosal and Smita Sharma took part in the discussion.
The other speakers remembered their long association with Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukherjee and paid their homage to him as a man who believed in the values of secularism, tolerance and pluralism.
Earlier, High Commissioner Muhammad Imran led the guests and members of the mission in placing wreaths and flower petals at a portrait of the late president. One-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to him.
A short documentary focusing on Pranab’s visits to Bangladesh both as president of India and as a citizen was screened at the meeting.
