Condolences pour in for former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee

DHAKA, Aug 31, 2020 (BSS) – Tributes and condolences continue to pour in for a prominent politician of the subcontinent and former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, who breathed his last this evening at a hospital in New Delhi, India, at the age of 84.

Immediately after his demise, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as well as political leaders of Bangladesh expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Pranab.

In his condolence message, the President said, “Pranab Mukherjee was a true friend of Bangladesh . . . His role in the War of Liberation in 1971 helped accelerate our victory”.

“His (Pranab) death is really an irreparable loss to the political arena in the subcontinent,” Abdul Hamid added.

The head of the state prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

In her condolence message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina described Mukherjee as Bangladesh’s “true friend” and recalled his “outstanding and unforgettable” contributions to the country’s 1971 Liberation War as a politician and real well-wisher.

“I always recall with profound respect his invaluable contributions to our Liberation War,” she said, also terming him as a celebrated politician of the sub-continent.

The premier prayed for salvation of departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Besides, in separate condolence messages, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Deputy Speaker Advocate Md Fazle Rabbi Miah, Deputy Leader of the Parliament Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Chief Whip Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin, Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed, Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Shawpan Bhattacharjee, State Minister for Labor and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian and Awami League Advisory Council Member and 14-party alliance spokesperson Amir Hossain Amu condoled the death of Mukherjee.

Besides, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee in Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Dhaka University former Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, Jatiya Party Chairman and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Parliament GM Quader, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad President Milan Kandi Dutta and General Secretary Nirmal Kumar Chatterjee also condoled the death of former Indian president and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
