Zia halted printing of Bangabandhu’s name in newspapers: Khalid
DHAKA, Aug 28, 2020 (BSS) – State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury today said BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s government halted printing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s name in newspaper after 15 August,1975 carnage.
“After the 15 August,1975 carnage, propaganda was carried out against Bangabandhu and his Baksal to save the assassins of father of the nation,” he told a discussion titled ‘Bangabandhu and Mass Media’ marking the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Mourning Day at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) here.
The state minister said, “It is not true that there was no protest against the assassination of Bangabandhu as protests were carried out, but the language of protests was different.”
The assassins of Bangabandhu wanted to bury his body in Tungipara without doing his last rituals but amidst protests, they bound to bathe the body and hold a janaza before laying him to the eternal rest, he added.
Khalid said Bangabandhu maintained a very good term with media and journalists upholding his ideology.
He said Bangabandhu is not only an individual rather an ideology and an institution as he unified the entire nation to jump into the Liberation War in 1971 to free the soil from the long subjugation of Pakistani oppressors.
The state minister paid glowing tributes to Bangabandhu and all martyrs of 1975 massacre.
Daily Observer Editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, DRU former president and Bangladesh Journal Editor Shahjahan Sardar, Jatiya Press Club (JPC) General Secretary Farida Yasmin, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) President Quddus Afrad, DRU former president Saiful Islam, Somoyer Alo executive director Shahnewaj Dulal and DRU former general secretary Syed Shukur Ali Shuvo addressed the discussion, among others.
DRU president Rafiqul Islam Azad chaired the discussion moderated by its general secretary Reaz Chowdhury.
