Flood, landslide may hit Ctg region soon

DHAKA, Aug 18, 2020 (BSS) – Flood may hit the country’s Chattogram region within coupes of days due to the onrush of hilly water coming from the upstream.

“Short-term flood situation may occur in some places of Chattogram, Bandarban and Cox’s bazar districts in the next 24 to 48 hours and there is a probability of landslides in the vulnerable areas,” Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said in a bulletin today.

The FFWC forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall for the south-eastern hilly region and the south-central coastal region in the next 24 to 48 hours. Rivers in these region may rise rapidly during this time.

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers are in steady state but the rivers may fall in the next 24 hours, the bulletin said.

Major rivers of the upper Meghna basin in the country’s north-eastern region are in falling trend, which may continue falling in the next 24 hours.

Besides, the Ganges and Padma rivers are in steady state, which may remain stable in the next 24 hours, according to the daily bulletin.

Water level of the major rivers in the Ganges basin continues to rise again because of the onrush of floodwater coming from upstream areas, BSS Rajshahi correspondent reports.

A rising trend was recorded at most of the river points in the Ganges basin this morning, according to the officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).

Water level of the Ganges River went up by five centimeter (cm) at Pankha point in Chapainawabganj, while nine cm at Rajshahi point, two cm at Hardinge Bridge point and six cm at Talbaria point in the last 24 hours ending at 9 am today, BWDB superintending engineer Mukhlesur Rahman told BSS.

He said the Ganges River was flowing 192 cm, 201 cm, 125 cm and 107 cm below the danger levels at Pankha, Rajshahi, Hardinge Bridge and Talbaria points respectively, while water level of the Padma River went up by five cm at Goalundo point and the river was flowing 13 cm above the danger level.

A total of 30 river points monitored in the Ganges basin today, water levels receded at 14 points, while went up at 14 points and remained stable at two points.

Water level of the Korotoa River declined by 17 cm and nine cm afresh at Chak Rahimpur and Bogura points respectively, and the river was flowing 196 cm and 282 cm below the danger level at the two points respectively this morning.

Besides, a further rising trend of water was recorded at all the three points of the Jamuna River. The water level of the river increased by three cm at Sariakandi point in Bogura, four cm at Kazipur point in Sirajganj and seven cm at Sirajganj point.
