National Mourning Day observed in Gaibandha with due honor

GAIBANDHA, Aug 15, 2020 (BSS) – National Mourning Day and the 45th
martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation and Architect of Sovereign
Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahman is being observed here today with
due respect and honor.

Marking the day, district administration chalked out elaborate programmes
that included hoisting of national flag at half mast, placing floral wreaths
at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The programmes also included art competition organised by Zila Shishu
Academy (ZSA) for the children, prize distribution to the winners, reading
books, doa and milad mahfil, arrangement of special prayers and munajat in
the mosques, temples and churches and other religious organisations, holding
blood donation programme and health camp by the Health department and
screening film and documentary on life and works of Bangabandhu at important
places by the District Information Office.

Besides, District Administration organised a discussion meeting on life of
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman that was held at the conference room of
Deputy Commissioner (DC) around 11 am with DC Abdul Matin in the chair.

Whip of the Jatiya Sangshad and local lawmaker Mahabub Ara Begum Gini
addressed the function as the chief discussant and Superintendent of Police
Towhidul Islam, Civil Surgeon Dr. ABM Abu Hanif, acting President of
Bangladesh Awami League (district unit) Farhad Abdullah Harun Bablu, its
General Secretary Abu Bakar Siddique, Mayor of Gaibandha Municipality
Advocate Shah Masud Jahangir Kabir Milon, Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman
Shah Sarwar Kabir and freedom fighter Goutam Chandra Modok also spoke at the
meeting.

The speakers said the August 15, 1975 is regarded as a shameful chapter in
the history of Bengali nation as on this day the undisputed leader
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with his family members were brutally
assassinated at his own residence by a group of disgruntled army officers.
Bangabandhu’s two daughters Sheikh Hasina (now Prime Minister) and Sheikh
Rehena survived as they were abroad at that time

The chief guest said the memory of Bangabandhu is alive not only in the
month of August, but also in every moment in our life and he would remain in
people’s heart forever as the best son of the soil for thousands of years and
the greatest Bengalee of all times.

The DC sought blessing of Almighty Allah for peace of the departed souls
of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other family members and relatives
who were assassinated on the fateful night of August 15 in 1975.

Later, the chief guest distributed prizes to the winners who participated
in the art and poem reciting competitions, said NDC Shahidul Islam.

All district and upazila level officials, political leaders of district AL
and its front organisations, public representatives, social workers and
members of civil society including the journalists of print and electronic
media attended the meeting.

Apart from it, the AL, district unit and its associate organisations also
observed the day amid different programmes.
