Bangabandhu was killed to destroy Bangladesh, besides removing him from power: Rezaul

DHAKA, Aug 13, 2020 (BSS) – Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim today said Bangabandhu was killed not only to remove him from the state power but also to destroy the country imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War.

“Bangabandhu was murdered through conspiracy and there was also political reason behind the killing… the killing spree was perpetrated not only to remove Bangabandhu from the state power, but also to destroy the country imbued with the spirit of Liberation War”, said the minister while attending a discussion and doa-mahfil at the Department of Fisheries (DoF) here.

Rezaul said conspiracies were repeatedly hatched to kill Bangabandhu and ultimately he was killed brutally on August 15 in 1975 following a dreadful coup.

He said, “Ziaur Rahman as a president approved a law in parliament on April 9 in 1979 to validate the assassination of Bangabandhu. He [Ziaur Rahman] made it a part of the Constitution.”

Later, the Khaleda Zia government had rehabilitated the killers of Bangabandhu by giving them posting at 12 Bangladesh missions abroad, he added.

He said Bangladesh imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War would not have been established if Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina would not return to the country in 1981.

Chaired by Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Rawnak Mahmud, the meeting also was attended, among others, by additional secretary Subal Bosh Moni, Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) Chairman Quazi Hasan Ahmed, Director General of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) Kazi Shams Afroz, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI)’s Director General Dr Yahya Mahmud and Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) Director General Dr Nathu Ram Sarker.
