Capital’s 25 wards still face dengue risk: survey

DHAKA, Aug 13, 2020 (BSS) – A total of 25 wards under the two city corporations in the capital still remain at risk of aedes-mosquito borne dengue disease transmission, said a survey.

According to the survey, the rate of aedes mosquito positive breeding places is 51.34 percent at multistoried buildings, 20.32pc under-construction buildings, 12.83pc at slums, 12.57pc at single-storied buildings and 2.94 percent at abandoned lands.

The monsoon periodic survey results were disclosed at a function at the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) auditorium here today.

It was conducted on aedes mosquito borne diseases in the two city corporation areas between July 19 and 28 under National Malaria and Aedes Transmitted Disease Control Programme of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS)’s Disease Control unit.

According to the survey results nine wards under Dhaka North City Corporation and 16 under Dhaka South City Corporation remain at risk of dengue transmission as the larvae density in the areas remains above 20 in Breteau Index (BI).

In the survey, the existence of aedes mosquito was higher in the DNCC wards–10, 11, 17, 19, 21, 23, 24, 29 and 32 while DSCC wards are 2, 4, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 25, 34, 40, 41, 45 and 51.

Principal Coordinator (SDG Affairs) of Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Zuena Aziz attended the ceremony as the chief guest with DGHS’s Communicable Disease Control (CDC) unit line director Professor Dr Shahnila Ferdous in the chair.

Deputy Program Manager of National Malaria and Aedes Transmitted Disease Control Programme Afsana Alamgir Khan presented the keynote paper on the occasion.
