Doctors call “critical” COVID-19 infected Mukherjee’s condition

NEW DELHI, Aug 11, 2020 (BSS) – Doctors described as “critical” former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee’s condition as he overnight underwent today a brain surgery at a specialised military facility where the 84-year-old president was diagnosed with COVID-19 as well.

“The former President who underwent lifesaving emergency surgery for brain clot on 10 August 2020 has not shown any improvement and his health status has worsened,” the Army Hospital Research and Referral said in a statement.

It said Mukherjee was on ventilator support after doctors made the surgical intervention to remove a clot in his brain on Monday.

Mukherjee himself in a tweet yesterday said he had tested positive for coronavirus as he went to the hospital “for a separate procedure” and urged everyone who had come in contact with him in the last week to isolate themselves as a precaution and get tested for Covid-19.

A veteran statesman and former Congress party leader, Mukherjee was India’s president between 2012 and 2017.

Minutes after Pranab Mukherjee posted the tweet, ministers, politicians across party lines and people of different spectrum took the social media to wish him for his speedy recovery and good health.

Indian Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu spoke to Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee and enquired about his well-being and wished for his speedy recovery and good health, according to his office.

Several top politicians including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, Congress leader Siddaramaiah, earlier were tested Covid-19 positive in the last few weeks.
