Shameem warns against illegal sand extractions

MADARIPUR, Aug 7, 2020 (BSS) – Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM EnamulHoqueShameem today issued a note of warning that none would be spared if they are found involved in illegal sand extraction from rivers.

“District administrations have been given necessary directives about taking legal actions against the people who will be found involved in illegal sand extractions from rivers. None, whoever he or sheis, would be spared,” he said.

Shameem, a lawmaker from Shariatpur-2 constituency, said this while talking to journalists after visiting the erosion affected areas of Madaripur town protection embankment here.

The deputy minister said the government is now putting emphasis on formulation of sustainable projects instead of doing any works on urgent basis.

In this regard, countrywide erosion-prone areas are being identified to adopt permanent and sustainable projects in phases to check river erosion, he added.

Shameem said Taka 8,000 crore project has been taken for Khulna, Bagerhar and Satkhira districts while a Tk 394 crore project is now awaiting for tender for Shibchar under Madaripur district.

Besides, a technical committee has been formed to make the Madaripur town protection embankment sustainable and stronger and the committee will implement the activities as the project works will begin before the next monsoon.
