Major rivers rising again in Brahmaputra basin
RANGPUR, Aug 1, 2020 (BSS) – Water levels of major rivers started
rising again following onrush of hilly water from the upper catchment
areas in the Brahmaputra basin during the last 24 hours till 9 am
today.
Officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said water
levels of the Brahmaputra, Jamuna, Dharla and Teesta might continue
rising during the next 24 hours at most points and remain steady at
some other points in the basin.
Water levels of the Dharla marked rise by 11cm at Kurigram Ghagot
by 4cm at Gaibandha, Brahmaputra by 18cm at Noonkhawa and 11cm at
Chilmari and Jamuna rose by 1cm at Fulchhari and 5 cm at Bahadurabad
points during the period.
The major rovers were flowing above the danger mark (DM) at nine
monitoring points in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura and
Sirajganj districts at 9.00 today.
The Dharla was flowing above the DM by 45cm at Kurigram,
Brahmanpara by 2cm at Noonkhawa and 26cm at Chilmari in Kurigram and
Ghaghot above the DM by 27cm at Gaibandha points at 9 am.
Besides, the Jamuna was flowing above the DM by 38cm at Fulchhari in
Gaibandha, 53cm each at Bahadurabad in Jamalpur and Sariakandi in
Bogura, 27cm at Kazipur and 34cm at Sirajganj points at 9.00 today.
Water levels of the Teesta remained steady at Dalia in Nilphamari
and rose by 4cm at Kawnia in Rangpur during the last 24 hours and were
flowing below the DM by 10cm and 20cm at these points respectively at
9.00 today.
According to the flood situation bulletin of the Flood Forecasting
and Warning Center (FFWC) of BWDB, the flood situation might remain
steady in Kurigram and improve in Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura
Sirajganj districts in the next 24 hours.
Talking to BSS, Chief Engineer for Rangpur Zone of BWDB Engineer
Jyoti Prosad Ghosh water levels of the Dharla, Teesta, Brahmaputra and
Jamuna rivers might continue to rise during the next 24 hours in the
basin.
“All flood control embankments and structures are remaining safe in
BWDB’s Rangpur zone where riverbank protection works are continuing at
some vulnerable points in Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Kurigram and Gaibandha
districts,” he added.
Meanwhile, the district administrations have further intensified
relief activities in the flood-hit areas of the affected districts in
the Brahmaputra basin.
Talking to BSS this afternoon, District Relief and Rehabilitation
Officer (DRRO) of Kurigram Abdul Hye Sarker said the second phase of
the deluge has affected over 2.50 lakh people of 62,630 families in
the district.
“The district administration continues distributing 190 tonnes of
rice, Taka 13 lakh, 8,000 packets of dry foods, Taka six lakh for baby
foods and Taka nine lakh animal fodders among flood-affected people in
three upazilas of the district,” Hye added.
Gaibandha DRRO Moazzem Hossain said more than 2.50 lakh people of
over 60,000 families have been affected by the second phase of the
flood this season in the district.
“Distributing 440 tonnes of rice, Taka eight lakh, 6,650 packets of
dry foods, Taka four lakh for baby foods and Taka nine lakh for animal
fodders continues in full swing among flood-hit people in the
district,” he added.
The district administrations have also intensified relief activities
in flood-affected areas of other northern districts in the Brahmaputra
basin.
