Govt adheres to pragmatic steps to protect environment: Speakers

DHAKA, July 30, 2020 (BSS)- As hearty environment and greenery of nature vastly support people to live a healthy life and rid them of climate change-induced problems, speakers in a discussion here today said the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has adhered to pragmatic steps for protecting the environment in Bangladesh alongside spreading the call of greening the world.

They exchanged their views while participating in a virtual webinar titled ‘ Mujib Borshe Bangladesh: Brikkhoropone Bishuddho Hok Paribesh’, organized by Awami League (AL)’s forests and environment affairs sub-committee.

Awami League Presidium Member Colonel (retd) Muhammad Faruk Khan, Information Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) Executive Director Atiq Rahman, Dhaka University’s Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies Director Dr Mahbuba Nasreen , General Secretary of Sirajganj Awami League Dr Habibe Millat, MP and Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President A M Amin Uddin took part in the webinar as the discussants.

AL Forests and Environment Affairs Sub-committee Secretary Delwar Hossain moderated the webinar online with Sub-committee chairman Professor Bazlul Haque Khandker in the chair.

The speakers said many countries and people around the world are at risks of being affected by the climate change.

As a healthy environment and nature can save people from the problem, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken the lead in protecting the environment in Bangladesh, they added.

In his speech, Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said the Prime Minister’s call for greenery has received a worldwide response.

The world has taken it seriously as Bangladesh is working to protect the environment under PM’s strong and capable leadership, he added.

He said her (Sheikh Hasina) various initiatives to protect the environment have also received worldwide recognition.

In 2015, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been announced as one of the winners of the highest environmental accolade of the United Nations, in recognition of Bangladesh’s far-reaching initiatives to address climate change, he continued.
