2 drug peddlers killed in gunfight with police in Cox’s Bazar

DHAKA, July 24, 2020 (BSS) – Two accused in a drug case, including one Union Parishad (UP) member, were killed in a ‘gun fight’ with police at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar in the early hours of today.

The deceased were identified as Rajapalang Ward Number-9 UP Member Bakhtiyar Ahmed alias Maulovi Bakhtiyar (55), son of late Kala Mia of Kutupalong area of Rajapalang union in Ukhiya upazila and Md Taher,27, son of Yusuf Ali, a resident of E-block of the Kutupalong Rohingya camp.

Teknaf Model police station officer-in-charge(OC) Pradeep Kumar Das said the gun fight took place in Hnila Union’s Wabrang area.

Police recovered five locally-made guns, 17 bullets and 20,000 pieces of yaba pills from the spot.

According to the information given by them, police along with the duo conducted a drive in Wabrang area to discover yaba, the OC said.

Sensing the presence of the police, the associates of Bakhtiyar and Taher first opened fire and at one stage police retaliated for their self protection, he added.

During the gun fight, Bakhtiyar and Taher received bullets that were fired by their own associates, he said.

The victims were rescued and taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared them dead.

The bodies of the deceased were kept at the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
