IGP pleads with public to heed health guidelines at cattle markets

DHAKA, July 15, 2020 (BSS) – Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr
Benazir Ahmed today pleaded with the public to heed health guidelines
and maintain social distancing at cattle markets.

“Everyone should abide by the health guidelines of the government
and maintain social distancing while celebrating the Eid-ul-Azha,” he
said and requested the public not to visit tourist spots,
entertainment centres and parks during the festival to prevent spread
of the lethal virus.

The IGP made the call while addressing a virtual meeting with
chiefs of all units of police on law and order and security ahead of
the Eid-ul-Azha at the police headquarters.

Benazir Ahmed said if possible antivirus chambers could be set up
at entrance of cattle markets in coordination with the lessees and
measures will also be taken against running of counterfeit notes while
buying sacrificial animals.

He said any sorts of extortion and anarchy would not be tolerated
centering the rawhides and asked the law enforcement to prevent
smuggling of rawhides.

The IGP said measures would be taken to ensure safe movement of the
homebound people during the Eid, saying, “All sorts of vehicles,
including launch, cannot carry extra passengers.”

He also directed to stop unfit vehicles on roads and highways and
ensure security of Eid Jamaats’ in important mosques.

Dr Benazir said surveillance and monitoring would be beefed up to
stop spread of rumour through social media during the Eid.

He said police have to be remained alert about activities of
militants and terrorist groups, adding that regular intelligence
information should have to be gathered along with strengthening
surveillance.

The IGP said, “We have set up a target to reduce rate of corona
infection in the police to zero. We have sent the Covid-19 pandemic
prevention handbooks to every police member. Necessary virus
protective equipment was provided to every police member side by side
with ensuring better treatment to the infected ones.”

“We want to build up a police force to be freed from corruption and
drug abuse,” he added.

During the meeting, the IGP also directed all concerned to ensure
necessary security on the occasion of the National Mourning Day, the
Holy Ashura and the Janmashtami next month.
