Labour ministry provides Tk84 crore to workers: Monnujan

DHAKA, July 8, 2020 (BSS) – Ministry of Labour and Employment has provided Tk 84 crore for welfare of the workers working in the export-oriented industrial sector.

This was informed at the 12th board meeting of the central fund in the conference room of the ministry on Tuesday with State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum MonnujanSufian in the chair, said a press release.

Monnujan said following the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,the Ministry of Labour and Employment formed a central fund in 2016 for the welfare of workers engaged in export-oriented industries, especially in the garment industry.

After the formation of the fund, over Taka 83.71 crore has been provided to the garment workers from the fund.

Of this, over Taka78.05 crore has been provided to the relatives of 3,920 dead workers and death insurance claims, Taka 1.96 crorehas been provided to 685 sick workers and Taka 1.7 crore has been provided to 535 meritorious children of the workers for higher education, the release added.

Director General of the central fund Amir Hossain said, since July 2016, a total of Taka 224 crore 12 lakh 39 thousand 600 were deposited in this fund. At present, about 125 crore have remained deposited in the fund.

Among others, Secretary of the Ministry KM Abdus Salam, Inspector General of the Department of Factory and Establishment Inspection Shivnath Roy, 1st Vice President of BKMEA Mohammad Hatem, Vice President of BKMEA Md. MorshedSarwar, MahilaSramik League Central Committee Joint-General Secretary SyedaKhairunNaharTamrin and BGMEA representatives were present at the meeting.
