Journalist Mozammel Haque laid to rest in Feni

DHAKA, June 30, 2020 (BSS) – Journalist and freedom fighter
Khondaker Mozammel Haque, who attained fame writing columns under the
pen name ‘Geduchacha’ in 1980s, was laid to rest with state honor at
his family graveyard in Feni a day after he died at a hospital in the
capital.

“He was buried with full state honor at his family graveyard in Feni
following two Namaz-e-Janazas maintaining health guidelines,”
Chattogram division journalists’ association, Dhaka’s secretary
general Shahin-ul-Islam told BSS.

Haque passed away with coronavirus symptoms at the age of 71 around
4pm on Monday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in
Badda in the capital since June 27, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ)
President Quddus Afrad said on Monday.

Earlier, his body was taken to his village home in Feni following a
Namaz-e-Janaza in front of his Segunbagicha residence here at 9am
today.

Mozammel, who was also an executive body member of Bangladesh
Chhatra League (BCL), is survived by his wife, two daughters and three
sons.

In separate condolence messages, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Awami
League (AL) General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister
Obaidul Quader, Information Minister and AL Joint General Secretary Dr
Hasan Mahmud, DUJ President Quddus Afrad and General Secretary Sajjad
Hossain Tapu expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Haque
and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep
sympathy to the bereaved family.

During the regime of General HM Ershad, in 1980, Mozammel Haque
attained a huge fame by penning columns in weekly ‘Sugandha’ under the
title ‘Geduchachar Khola Chithi’ subtitled ‘Open Letter of
Geduchacha’.

In that column, he portrayed different problems and crisises of the
society, gave suggestions to overcome those obstacles and criticized
the then government.

Haque edited weekly ‘Surjadoy’ and later served as chief editor of
another weekly named ‘Ajker Surjadoy’.

Haque was serving as the president of Chattogram division
journalists’ association, Dhaka and an adviser of Feni Journalists’
Forum (Dhaka).
