Journalist Mozammel Haque no more

DHAKA, June 29, 2020 (BSS) – Journalist and freedom fighter KhondakerMozammel Haque, who used to write columns under pen name Geduchacha, passed away while undergoing treatment at a Badda hospital here this afternoon.

“Having Covid-19 symptoms, Mozammel Haque breathed his last around 4pm at a private hospital in Badda. He had been undergoing treatment at the hospital’s ICU since June 27,” Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) President QuddusAfrad told BSS.

He was 71.

Mozammel, who was also an executive body member of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), is survived by wife, two daughters and three sons.

His body will be taken to his village home in Feni following a namaz-e-janaza in front of his Sugunbagicha residence here at 9am tomorrow.

The freedom fighter will be laid to eternal rest at a graveyard at his village home in Feni, family sources said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in a condolence message, expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Haque who was the editor of weekly ‘Surjadoy’ and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Information Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud also mourned the death of Haque who also edited another weekly named ‘Ajker Surjadoy’.

In a condolence message, he recalled the life and work of Haque praying for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveying deep sympathy to bereaved family.

In 1980s during the regime of General HM Ershad, Mozammel Haque attained a huge fame by penning columns in weekly ‘Sugandha’ under the title ‘GeduchacharKholaChithi’ subtitled ‘Open Letter of Geduchacha’.

In that column, he portrayed different problems and crisis of the society, gave suggestions what to do to overcome those obstacles and criticized the then government.

Haque was serving as the president of Chattogram division journalists’ association and an adviser and Feni Journalists’ Forum (Dhaka).
